Salvadoran journalists’ phones hacked with spyware, report found

DUBAI: The overall ratings of the US news broadcaster CNN have fallen by almost 90 percent this year, even in the lucrative age group of 25 to 54 year olds, according to Nielsen data.

The media company recorded an average of 548,000 viewers in the first week of January, compared to 2.7 million in the same period last year. And the seven-day numbers showed that only 113,000 people in the 25- to 54-year-old age group tuned in this year, up from 822,000 on average in 2021.

Last year’s coverage of the Capitol Hill riots on January 6th reached the highest number of viewers CNN had seen since its inception in 1980. But it had lost that height a year later when viewers switched to rival Fox News.

For the past 12 months, CNN has been rife with scandals. It fired Chris Cuomo on prime-time after it was found the presenter was secretly helping his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, on sexual harassment allegations that led to his resignation.

Don Lemon, another prime-time presenter, also came under fire for his coverage of the trial of “Empire” star Jussie Smollett, in which he failed to mention his involvement in the reference to the actor.

Despite a record in 2021, viewership across the network fell in the second half of the year. CNN battled for viewers during prime time – between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. – which was down 83 percent year over year, Nielsen’s data showed.

Meanwhile, Fox News averaged 1.41 million viewers per day for the week of January 3, making it the most-watched network on basic cable Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m., Adweek reported. It also had an average of more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined for the 21st straight week.

The report added that in the week of January 3, Fox News was in the lead with 1,408,000 during the day and 2,303,000 during prime time, while CNN was behind with 548,000 during the day and 705,000 during prime time.
