How social media use has (and has not) changed among adolescents and adults


Social media has started to face a reckoning in recent years – about how much time we spend on how it affects us, ongoing accusations and scandals about how content should be moderated, and how much responsibility Silicon Valley has for its negatives Consequences bears and ramifications for everything from elections to the spread of misinformation. From 2015 to 2019, historical survey data shows that teenage usage of Snapchat and Instagram increased while usage of Facebook and Twitter steadily decreased.

Of the more than 8,000 teenagers surveyed in 2019, 41 percent chose Snapchat as their social media platform of choice (up from 45 percent in 2018), while 35 percent chose Instagram as their preferred app. Overall, Instagram is the most-used platform in the survey, although more youthful users preferred Snapchat.

As with all social media, the best measure of its effectiveness is daily active use: How often you open the app during the day, sometimes without registering or scrolling thoughtlessly for no reason. Pew found that around three-quarters of Facebook users are daily active users, with more than half using it multiple times a day. On Snapchat, 46 percent of users open the app several times a day; According to Pew, 42 percent of Instagram users and 32 percent of YouTube users do the same.

The numbers are increasing significantly among the younger age groups. In the 18 to 29 age group, 68 percent use Snapchat several times a day and 60 percent open Instagram several times a day.
