Britain wants to ban advertising for “junk food” before 9pm


The UK bans junk food ads from being broadcast on television or online before 9pm to address the issue of child obesity.

The ban only allows junk food to be advertised between 9:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., according to the UK Department of Health and Welfare

Outside of these hours, advertising of foods high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) is not permitted.

However, healthy foods with HFSS content such as honey, olive oil, avocados, and marmite are exempt from the restrictions.

The ban is due to come into force after a “public consultation” at the end of next year, the ministry said.

The mandate applies only to companies with 250 employees or more that manufacture and / or sell HFSS products.

Small and medium-sized businesses will not be subject to the restrictions, the ministry said, as the government “recognizes that these businesses may be hardest hit by the pandemic and rely on online media as the only way to communicate with their customers. ”

The ministry said the new policy will “help protect children from developing long-term unhealthy eating habits and improve the health of the country, and is only part of broader plans to combat childhood obesity”.

“We are committed to improving the health of our children and fighting obesity,” said British Health Minister Jo Churchill in a statement.

“The content teenagers see can affect their choices and habits. As children spend more time online, it is important that we protect them from unhealthy advertising, ”she added.

The Department of Health and Welfare predicts the television and online restrictions could remove 7.2 billion calories from UK children’s diets annually, which in turn could cut the number of obese children by more than 20,000.

London introduced a ban on advertising junk food on the city’s public transport network in November 2018 to tackle child obesity.
