Media literacy workshop at St Aloysius PU College, Mangaluru

Mangalore: BBC Young Reporter India, a student media education program launched by BBC News in partnership with Internews and in partnership with Data LEADS, conducted an online workshop for students at St. Aloysius PU College.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how much damage misinformation can do. Young people urgently need training to think critically and understand the difference between real and fake, especially on the internet.

Dr. Vahini Associate Professor, Dept of Electronic Media, Bangalore University, led the online workshop. She highlighted sources of information, dealing with fake news, tools to review real and fake news, tools and techniques for social media and image review, video review, and INVID.

After the workshop, students will have the opportunity to produce videos, bulletins, skits and poems that will be featured in a BBC newsletter and will participate in future events and media coverage of the program and partners. Ms. Misthy, Project Associate, BBC Young Reporter India, guided the students through contributions to the BBC newsletter.

The workshop helped the students develop media literacy and find their way around the online world. The certificates of participation were presented to the 135 students who enthusiastically participated in the interactive workshop. Ms. Reena J Monteiro, Head of the English Department, and Ms. Verina Tauro, English Department, were present. As a student participant, Vinay moderated the workshop, while Fiona Sequeira suggested the thank you.
