Latvia is helping organize a UN media literacy seminar / article

Organized as part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week, it will take place online at 3:00 pm, Latvian time, and will focus on the role of civil society in media literacy under the title: “Empowering Civil Society in Strengthening Media and Information Literacy – Best Practices and Paths for Future Action. “

The event will be moderated by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communication Melissa Fleming and co-organized by the Delegation of the European Union in New York and the missions of Latvia, Jamaica, Georgia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa.

The pre-solicitation states that “journalists, researchers, NGOs and activists” will be involved, but does not specifically name any.

On March 21, 2021, the UN General Assembly unanimously passed the resolution proclaiming a global week of media and information literacy from March 24th.

“This side event aims to illustrate how civil society organizations are helping to prevent or combat disinformation and misinformation both online and offline, thereby strengthening societies’ resilience at the national and global levels respective roles in a rapidly changing political and technological landscape, “said the organizers.

The meeting will take place on Zoom and will be streamed live, including on UN WEB TV, and we are planning to broadcast a live stream of the event here on LSM Eng as well.
