Media Literacy Week from October 25th to 30th
According to a survey by Statistics Canada (Canadian Perspectives Survey Series, conducted September 14-20, 2020), four in ten Canadians have spent more time on social media and messaging services (41 percent) since the pandemic began.
Young Canadians aged 15 to 34 (57 percent) were most likely to use social media and messaging services.
For this reason this year is Media literacy week aims to highlight the essential digital skills that today’s digital citizens need.
Organized by MediaSmarts, Canada’s digital and media literacy center, the annual event invites all Canadians – teachers, students, seniors, community groups, libraries, and museums – to celebrate with digital media literacy activities.
To celebrate the week, MediaSmarts has also created five theme days with free resources that anyone can use and a week of media literacy Teacher center curated with Classes and activities for students from kindergarten to 12th grade
MediaSmarts also hosts A conversation about researching digital media literacy in Canada, which will bring scientists together on Thursday, October 28 at 12:30 p.m. EST, to discuss research into digital media literacy in Canada.
Media Literacy Week is organized in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF / FCE) and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CUNESCO).
Canada’s 16th annual Media Literacy Week takes place October 25-30.
