Biden plans to campaign with Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia elections

As polls show that the gubernatorial election in Virginia between former governor Terry McAuliffe, D-Va. and head to head Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin, President Biden will campaign with the Democrat.

The McAuliffe campaign issued a media notice alerting the press that Biden would be campaigning with McAuliffe in Arlington on Tuesday, exactly a week before the election.

McAuliffe announced the Biden event along with a series of events with politicians from Virginia and across the nation. Former President Barack Obama will campaign with McAuliffe in Richmond on Saturday. Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams and DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison will gather for McAuliffe in Charlottesville on Sunday.

The latest polls have put McAuliffe and Youngkin in a dead heat, with Monmouth University finding both candidates with 46%. The Democrat still leads the RealClearPolitics survey average with 48.8% compared to McAuliffe’s 47%.

Amid tense school board meetings in Fairfax and Loudoun counties that found national media coverage, McAuliffe stated in a debate, “I don’t think parents should tell schools what to teach.” Fox News polls showed that most likely Virginia voters – and 57 percent of Virginia parents – disagree, and Youngkin urged McAuliffe to agree. While McAuliffe claimed Youngkin took the statement out of context, the Youngkin campaign ran an ad in which McAuliffe stood by the statement seven times.

Both Youngkin and McAuliffe pledged to pay Virginia teachers more and invest in education. However, Youngkin has accused McAuliffe of lowering standards in state schools. While serving as governor between 2014 and 2018, McAuliffe signed a bill that ordered less emphasis on standardized test scores in the accreditation of Virginia public schools. While 88 schools were refused accreditation according to the old standards in 2017, no school has been refused accreditation since the new standards came into force in 2018.

McAuliffe has touted the lack of emphasis on standardized testing as positive, while Youngkin has blamed him for it.

McAuliffe also campaigned for Virginia’s strong economic performance in his previous tenure and promised a return to growth. Youngkin has since advocated tax cuts and entrepreneurship programs.
