OnlyFans Bans Most NSFW Content: Fans Blame Mastercard, Politics, and Bella Thorne

Share

OnlyFans has been an adult media subscription platform for years providing sex workers with a safe and reliable source of income.

It has been used by teen mom stars, 90 day fiance stars, and most notoriously Bella Thorne.

Now the site has announced an alarming pivot that will abruptly ban much of the site’s content.

Horrified and angry social media users dig through reports and misinformation to find out who is to blame. Did Bella Thorne ruin the site?

To quote a popular and all too often relevant meme, we’re all looking for the guy who did this.

On Thursday August 19th, Bloomberg and other media outlets reported that OnlyFans banned many things that people consider “porn” from a porn site that most would refer to as a porn website.

Sex workers and content creators had noticed red flags in this direction for some time.

Despite some confusing press coverage, OnlyFans’s creators can still upload photos and videos, even with some level of nudity and sexual content.

Other things ranging from illegal material (already banned) to some fancier kinks to pretty mundane kink brackets are banned.

There is great uncertainty among the non-celebrity OnlyFans creators, many of whom have invested money in cameras, lighting, and equipment because this is their main source of income.

What exactly is leaving the site? At first we just heard that “sexually explicit” material is about to be banned.

Certain types of bondage and totally consensual “rough” sex scenes are reportedly out in the first place.

OnlyFans already requires that everyone who appears in a piece of content is an adult with a verified identity.

They are now overseeing the type of sex consenting adults have and leaving all remaining site creators running on eggshells.

Some, most of whom are either opposed to sex work or whose standard stance is denigrating women, say that affected sex workers should get “real jobs.”

But the creators of OnlyFans already have a real job. Whether it’s stripping, cam work, porn or full service, sex work is real work.

OnlyFans isn’t the first site to try to ban a large part of its content.

The infamous 2018 Tumblr purge nearly destroyed the blogging platform and was devastating for artists and sex workers alike.

Previously, Backpage and Craigslist both had to suspend features that were a godsend for sex workers.

Much of it comes from FOSTA / SESTA, a supposedly well-intentioned but ultimately reprehensible law that was passed a few years ago.

Under the guise of combating “sex trafficking,” the legislation made many (consensual) sex workers unable to work online because web services risked penalties if caught hosting them.

The consequences of this go much deeper than the inconvenience to sex workers or their clients.

On sites like Backpage, full-service sex workers could safely screen potential customers before a face-to-face meeting.

Now that they are unable to do so, they are back to meeting customers in person without checking them out. The potential dangers are obvious and potentially fatal.

Every senator who has voted for the law, including those you or I may like, has blood on their hands.

OnlyFans is just the latest victim in what appears to be a war on online fun.

We must keep in mind that this is a direct assault on people’s livelihoods, not just an inconvenience for people who want to look at naked people.

Who exactly is to blame?

Bella Thorne is mostly see-through

After the disgusting news of OnlyFans’ policy change broke on Thursday, Bella Thorne’s name was soon trending.

Why? Because when Bella famously joined the site for tremendous financial success, she effectively “broke” several features.

At the time, she was also accused of interfering in the work of real sex workers who, unlike Bella, were not famous millionaires and actually need the money.

The joke on Twitter was that Bella’s participation in the site last year caused a domino effect that led to it.

While her reckless use of the site to post mostly SFW content led to her being accused of “cheating” customers, it wasn’t really her doing.

In fact, Bella doesn’t actually post the type of content that is being banned. The root causes for this are much more bleak.

So … what’s the truth?

The official statement from OnlyFans that the change is to “meet the requirements of our banking partners and payout providers”.

Against this background, this twist of a well-known meme was brought about:

OnlyFans Mastercard

This meme might be a joke, but it’s spot-on in many ways.

MasterCard is introducing new rules and requirements for all adult media websites.

If the sites fail to meet the extreme requirements of the card company, customers will no longer be able to use these cards to make payments.

So why is MasterCard turning into Frollo and setting fire to anything that dares to make people horny?

It’s not just MasterCard. PayPal is known to be hostile to sex workers. And Visa and other cards are expected to have similar rules soon.

There is a complex chain of factors that lead to this, but a big part of it is … Christian Dominionism. We’re not kidding.

This twitter thread actually sets things out with specific source citations if you want an in-depth look at cause and effect.

The “short” version, let’s say a little too late to report about it with almost 900 words, is that there are malicious groups in our society who are waging a “culture war”.

They pursue the LGBTQ + community, women’s rights and more … but sex work is an easier goal.

Deavan Clegg OF - OnlyFans-Header May 2021

Be honest: railing loudly about the existence of gays is not as popular as it was a few decades ago.

The trans * community is greeted with much bigotry, but mainstream transphobia in the United States is meeting an increasingly partisan chasm.

What question might unite conservatives with gullible liberal politicians and their constituents? Scare tactics about “sex trafficking”.

Karine Staehle OnlyFan's Profile January 13, 2021

Sex trafficking is a real thing. There are people in this world who are forced into horrors that most of us cannot imagine.

But that should never be confused with sex work. “Consensual sex worker” is unnecessary.

Likewise, someone who is a voluntarily paid construction worker or farmer should not be equated with a slave.

What is happening is that people with Christian dominionist intentions – who want to make the laws of their religion part of our legal code – are sounding the alarm.

On sites like Pornhub, OnlyFans, Backpage, and others, they talk about sex trafficking and exploitation, both real and imaginary.

No politician wants to be considered a “pro-sex trade”, with the possible exception of Matt Gaetz, forming the worst kind of bipartisan coalition.

Anfisa Nava OnlyFans profile

Laws targeting sex trafficking almost always make the lives of sex workers more difficult and dangerous.

Part of this is due to restrictions on online content.

It’s also more difficult because full-service sex work is illegal in most of the United States.

Stephanie Matto OnlyFans Profile

And besides? Not everyone can get other jobs.

This is especially true for transsexuals and disabled sex workers as well as single parents.

A job done from home on a flexible schedule that allows you to make real, consistent money? For many, this is their dream job.

Corey Rathgeber OnlyFans Profile

However, this goes deeper than a toxic bipartisan war against sex workers.

Anti-sex worker hate groups, often fighting under the thin guise of “women’s rights” or the ever ominous “family-oriented” banner, campaign directly for payment processors.

They convince big banks and cards and other financial service providers not to do business with websites called sex workers.

Evelin Villegas OnlyFans Profile

Worst-case scenario, Bella Thorne has shown OnlyFans that they can still make money off of painfully tame, non-sexual material.

Because of that, this has been building for months, starting with OnlyFans playing ads for chefs and other SFW entertainers.

They built their vast media empire on the backs of sex workers. Now the website is discarding many of them. It’s embarrassing.
