Florida man buys TV commercials to reopen the US-Canada border
John Adams wants the US-Canada border to reopen now. This is personal for Adams, who owns a Canada vacation home on Vancouver Island.
BUFFALO, NY – 2 On Your Side has heard of politicians wanting the northern border to reopen, and now a retired Florida businessman is buying television commercials to make it happen.
John Adams is part of the Families are Essential Facebook group and buys ads in border towns, including here in Buffalo. He wants the US-Canada border to reopen now. This is personal for Adams because he owns a vacation home in Canada on Vancouver Island.
“When March came we were just making our plans to go. We didn’t go. Next month we expect the announcement, and next month, and next month. Fourteen months in a row, and here we are, and all I saw.” “Was that President Biden and Prime Minister Trudeau kicked the can down the street,” said Adams.
“And I said this has to come to an end, so that’s figuratively, but I said I’m going to stomp the can and it’s going nowhere and I’m going to start doing some TV commercials that they aren’t to like.”
The ads highlight the fact that some people haven’t seen loved ones in over a year. Another new topic will highlight vaccine availability and how Adams thinks Canadians can come to the United States to get vaccinated.
To date, advertisements have aired in Buffalo, Detroit, and western Washington state.
Adams initially paid for them himself. He says the ads ran 153 times and cost $ 2,700. Then he launched a GoFundMe page that raised more than half of his $ 30,000 goal. He believes the ads are reaching the right people.
“I reach people who are crazy and I reach people who are hurt. It is wrong not to allow me to go to my house in Canada that I pay taxes on, man lives here and the girl lives over there, not to see each other, that’s immoral and this has to stop, “said Adams.
Adams says he has someone to check his house for him.
2 On Your Side also asked him what it was like to be so close to the border on Thursday and not be allowed to enter Canada.
“I’m a little sad, but at the same time I’m happy because the law is on our side. The power of the people gives us energy. We will win this fight. Prime Minister Trudeau, you can do it the easy way or you can do it the hard way. The easy way is to say I don’t want to see these ads anymore. I really don’t want to run these ads. What I want to do is put in a big, beautiful ad that says, ‘Thank you, President Biden, thank you, Prime Minister Trudeau, for listening to the people,’ “said Adams.
Adams also wants Canadians to come to New York state to get the vaccine. He says he won’t stop sending the ads until the border reopens.
He’s still collecting money online. Adams plans to air ads in Toronto and Ottawa next week. He now has over $ 15,000 to spend and says the airtime is cheaper in Canada so he expects to air a lot of ads there.
